The Open Gardens Program was created in 2005 in garden-city Podkowa Leśna by two authors, Magdalena Prosinska, inhabitant of the grden-city and Lukasz Willmann, with strong support of Podkowa Lesna City Council and the Association of Podkowa Lesna Citizens, on the 80th anniversary of the foundation of Podkowa Lesna, one of the most beautiful garden-cities in Mazovia Region in central Poland.

The event has expanded each year in attendance and subject matter. In 2006 two neighboring towns, Brwinow and Milanowek, joined the Program. In 2007 six towns located around Warsaw participated. Other green towns, in Southern Poland, have expressed interest in taking part in 2009.

Each year new institutions and partners from Mazovia Voivodeship and other regions of Poland join the Open Gardens Program. The project has won several prizes.
